Shining Star - Daniel Try

Everyone loves food, but at Lifelong Learning Centres we love it even more when we are serving children Healthy Food. Kids Academy Hornsby Cook, Daniel Try is doing exactly that and leading the way for our other cooks across the country as we continue our partnership with feedAustralia.

Daniel has been working at Kids Academy Hornsby for the past three years and has been on a steep learning curve from the outset.

“When I started I sort of stumbled into the role after being self employed in the cafe industry. I fell in love with making such a huge difference to children’s lives,” says Daniel.

“However, it was challenging. When I started I had absolutely zero knowledge of what was expected from me or what the industry standards were as I didn’t have a background in the childcare industry.”

Thanks to the support of his amazing wife, Centre Director and fellow staff he swiftly learnt the ropes and is now leading the way for others wishing to follow in his footsteps.

Daniel has recently collaborated with our staff in the Centre Support Office to create a suite of Winter Menu recipes that align with the requirements set out by feedAustralia.  The world-leading nutritional education and preventative health initiative has been a key driver for the entire Lifelong Learning Centre network’s Healthy Food Program

With around 60 per cent of adults and 25 per cent of children classified as obese in Australia, feedAustralia aims to support a healthy ntion through the use of their online menu planning tool. It’s this tool that Daniel used to help create his extensive Winter Menu that has been provided to cooks across our network.

“You really can’t go past the huge grin on a child’s face, knowing you had some part of its creation, that’s my favourite part of my job, that’s what drives me,” says Daniel.

Daniel believes that healthy food is one of the most current topics in early childhood education and is proud of his contribution to the movement.

“The science is showing the importance of a healthy diet more and more in a child’s development physically, emotionally, and mentally,” he says.

“Healthy food really is the backbone of healthy development and I have set myself a goal to expand my knowledge base and be a larger contributor to lifting the standards of our children’s diet.”

Thank you Daniel for your dedication to your work and for living our values of delivering outstanding professionalism and creating shining stars. You’ve definitely come a long way from setting the fire alarm off week one with a pizza.
