DIY Experiment: The Importance Of Hand Washing

Explaining the importance of hand washing and using soap to children can sometimes be a challenge, especially when you can’t see germs. Thankfully, we have a fun, hands-on activity you can do at home with your child to help them understand why using soap is so important!

"This is a simple activity we did in-centre at Milestones Early Learning Quinns Rocks, but you could easily do this at home too!”, said Assistant Centre Manager, Jessica Ashley.

"For older children, this experiment is really about understanding the concept of surface tension but for younger children, it’s a great way to vividly show the importance of soap and practicing good hygiene.”

What you will need:

  • A bowl or plate
  • Tap water
  • Black pepper
  • Liquid dish soap

  1. Pour water onto plate or bowl (ensure minimum 2cm depth)

  2. Sprinkle pepper over the water (not too much!)

  3. Dip your finger in the water and see what happens….

  4. Put a little dish soap on your finger, then put it in the water again!

  5. What a difference a bit of soap makes!

During the activity, ask your child why they think hand washing with soap is important. Invite them to ask any other questions they may have.
