Lifelong Learning Centres Celebrate Lunar New Year & The Year Of The Ox!

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2021 is the Year of the Ox. Just like the animal, the Year of the Ox represents diligence, strength and persistence. Throughout February, children in our Lifelong Learning centres have been celebrating the Year of the Ox and learning more about the Lunar New Year through participating in a range of activities!

The team at Milestones Early Learning Brookside transformed their learning areas and added a range of resources to allow their children to explore aspects of Chinese Culture in celebration of the Lunar New Year. Through storytelling and language classes the children were able to extend both their social and emotional learning by gaining a deeper understanding of the Chinese holiday. The children were also able to build up their fine motor skills by practicing using chopsticks!

At Papilio Early Learning Ryde, Miss Tiffany taught the children about traditions surrounding Chinese New Year, specifically how people decorated their houses with red paper called ‘Fai Chun’. After the story, the children were able to engage in crafts and made red envelopes symbolising good luck.

Although the children at Papillo Early Learning Blackburn are already quite knowledgeable about Lunar New Year through their weekly Mandarin classes, they had some extra fun participating in cooking and craft activities this week.

“We love celebrating cultural events here at Papilio Blackburn. We are so lucky to have a cultural diverse team, who have so many talents to share with the children,” said Centre Manager Emily Ellis.

The children were invited to participate in a range of activities, from dumpling making to craft activities such as making lanterns and lucky red envelopes know as ‘Hong bao’. The children also got to practice using chopsticks and writing Chinese characters with calligraphy brushes.

As part of our Healthy Children early learning framework which is implemented in all Lifelong Learning Centres, we aim to engage our children in their communities to encourage a sense of belonging.

The exploration and involvement in cultural celebrations from all around the world from a young age will instill a respect for other cultures and help the children gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.
